Mononoke Hime’s forest.

A couple of weekends ago I was still in Japan, visiting Yakushima: a small island south of Japan.
Dylan of Q-Games had kindly remarked that “there’s nothing there” and I should head to Kyoto instead (where there’s a lot more bars, obviously). He was right as there is not much more to see than a forest. But what a forest! Yakushima is not only a UNESCO world heritage site, its primeval forest was also the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s Mononoke Hime. With its deers roaming peacefully between millenarian cedar trees and moss covered rocks, it’s quite easy to understand why.

On the way out of Yakushima, I was also treated to one of those delightful Japanese idiosyncrasies: apparently, harassing attendants while drunk has become such a problem that it warrants the third spot on the poster about forbidden behaviors in flight.

That forest seems almost magical with all that moss. Great pictures Olivier!
Btw, I once sent you an email, but you never replied. But in short: Thank you for Soul Bubbles!

Hey Jacob,

Sorry for not answering your email but I can’t find it even in my spams! :(
Glad you liked Soul Bubbles and the pictures. I hope Yakushima will inspire your work as much as it did Miyazaki. Keep it up!
